Charles A. Kraus, professor of chemistry and director of chemical research at Brown university, has been awarded the Willard Gibbs medal of the Chicago section of the American Chemical society for 1935, it was announced yesterday. The award, one of the highest scientific honors bestowed in the United States, was given Dr. Kraus for his research on solvents. Departing from the usual method of chemical reactions in liquid solvents, Dr.

Kraus began his experiments with liquid ammonia upon his graduation from the University of Kansas in 1894. While his investigations have been conducted entirely in the field of pure science, their influence has extended to industry on many occasions. When tetraethyl lead in gasoline was found to prevent engine knock, Dr. Kraus was called upon to work out a method for quantity production and within three months evolved a process which is essentially the one still used. He is credited with much of the research work leading to the discovery of pyrex glass.

Dr. Kraus was born in Knightsville, in 1875. WIDOW OF JUDGE McGANNON DIES AT PONTIAC, MICH. Pontiac, Feb. Anna McGannon, matron of the Detroit House of Correction in Plymouth, and widow of Judge William H.
