Tyler Childers Ghosted Ernest, Post Malone Over Morgan Wallen Affiliation (1)

Tyler Childers apparently wanted to have nothing to do with Ernest and Post Malone while they were hanging with Morgan Wallen, according to recent revelations by Ernest.

According to Ernest, on the night that the massive hit “I Had Some Help” was recorded that paired Morgan Wallen and Post Malone together in the studio, Tyler Childers happened to be in Nashville as well, and texted Post Malone to see if he wanted to hang out. Tyler Childers was at a currently-undisclosed bar in East Nashville at the time. But when it wasn’t just Post Malone who showed up, but an entire entourage of pop country names, Childers fled.

As Ernest tells the story in an Instagram video,

The night we wrote “I Had Some Help,” we were all in the studio, Post, Morgan, me, Charlie [Handsome], Ashley Gorley, Chandler [Walters]. And Tyler texted Post, ‘Come meet us at a bar.’ And he was like, ‘Alright, bringing the fellas.’ So we get to this bar, which was in East Nashville, I was already skeptical.
We get to the bar, I walk in first, Post and Morgan are outside of the bar talking to fans. I walk in, tap Tyler on the shoulder, ‘Hey how’s it going? I’m Ernest.’ ‘Hey, Ernest, good to meet you.’ ‘Hey, the boys are right behind me, they’re coming in, He looks over, sees them, and then he leans over to his friend and says something. He goes, ‘Hey, Ernest, you wanna have a seat? I was like ‘Yeah, sure.’
He he gets up, gives me a seat, and then I turn around, and he walks out the other side of the bar, not to be heard from or seen again. Didn’t text Post back, none of that just. Just went MIA, but I get it. Politics.

The caption Ernest included with the video said, “Still love u Timmy Ty Childers,” and he said later, “Let’s be clear … I respect it.” So clearly Ernest carries no bad blood. Where things stand between Tyler Childers and Post Malone is undetermined.

Especially over the last few years, Tyler Childers has been a very private person, avoiding social media, and not really meeting with fans or anyone else. He also got sober in 2020, so even though he might have been hanging out in a bar in East Nashville, it was unlikely he was drinking or wanting to socialize in a larger crowd. Childers and Post Malone might know each other through Sturgill Simpson.

Many people around Tyler Childers have confirmed he’s taken a very “from the bus to the stage” stance in the last few years due to trying to remain sober and in a good state of mental health. That is why his openness with members of the Blackfeet Tribe in Montana at a benefit he headlined in 2024 was so exceptional.

Ernest decided to tell the story after first alluding to it on a Bussin’ With The Boyspodcast episode that aired earlier in the week with Jelly Roll. It led to much speculation to what had happened, which inspired Ernest to tell the full story.

Also, when did Morgan Wallen throw that chair off the roof of a Nashville bar? It may not have been politics as much as smartness.

  The chair incident happened on April 7th. I’ve been unable to confirm when “I Had Some Help” was recorded, but it was released on May 10th, 2024, which would likely mean it was recorded many months before, perhaps late 2023.

    April 7th of last year … 2024? We haven’t even reached the one year anniversary of the chair incident?
    I went through Ernest’s instagram (I need a shower now) and it looks the collaboration was recorded and the night in question was November 5, 2023 – right on the mark, Trig. There’s a picture of all three of them in the studio announcing the recording of their song.
    Still, even before the chair incident, being out with Wallen in a bar was problematic (and not political) especially for a sober, image conscious person like Tyler.

      Even before the N-word incident (let alone the chair incident), Morgan Wallen was seen as a problematic character. He’d been arrested at Kid Rock’s bar. He broke COVID protocol and had his appearance on SNL cancelled, among other minor incidents.

        Don’t be dog whistled. Even without the COVID SNL thing, Morgan Wallen was seen as problematic even before the N-word incident. He’d been arrested multiple times at that point. I agree context is everything and it looks like a popcorn far compared to some country artists of the past. But perhaps Tyler Childers did not want to be around him because of his past behavior. That’s all anyone is asserting, and that seems like a reasonable explanation for his behavior.

But it is funny that many (not you) who cheer the reckless behavior of past stars like Hank or Waylon think Wallen is some danger or sign of genre depravity. Compared to Merle’s checkered and criminal past, Wallen is a preschool bad boy.

It’s not “politics” to not want to hang out with someone that acts the way Morgan Wallen acts. It’s “poltics” to hang out with him because he can help your career. Which is what Ernest was doing.

    Reading Ernest’s account of it Childers doesn’t seem to have had a problem with him. Said, hi, did introductions… It seems he had a problem with who he saw when he looked over (probably Morgan Wallen), which I can respect. I don’t read this as Childers has an issue hanging with “pop” dudes, or less famous dudes, or less talented dudes, or white rappers, or sycophants. It seems the main issue is assholes.

    Post Malone seems to be hanging out with guys who are real country musicians: Dwight, colter, strings, etc. and seems like a pretty humble dude outside of his stage persona. According to Ernest’s recounting of events ,Tyler wanted to hang out with Post, not necessarily all of Austin’s friends which includes Wallen who is known to be an alcoholic jackass.

      I’m no fan of Post but he was posting covers of Country songs years ago like the Brad Paisley song. Post seems like an artist that you could have a conversation with. I can’t say the same for Wallen. (Or Zach Bryan)
      Everything in this comment section is pure speculation and I’ll add to it – there is nothing worse than trying to have a meaningful conversation with someone we is spaced out, drunk, self-centered, and ADD – which I am sure Wallen is like that.

  I’m pretty sure Earnest and Morgan have been friends for a while. Earnest wrote on almost every song on Morgans “Dangerous” album. My point is Earnest doesn’t need to hang around anybody for “ politics” as you suggested.

I’ve been known to leave bars just because someone played a Morgan Wallen song on the jukebox, so this hardly seems newsworthy.
As far as the “politics” thing goes, sure, one of the most respected independent guys socializing with someone as milquetoast and mainstream as Wallen might create a bad visual; but I’m guessing it has more to do with a guy trying to maintain his sobriety not wanting to hang with a big crowd of drinkers, especially when one seems to have a problem with imbibing responsibly.

  I think this is more it. Tyler probably wanted to chat with Post Malone about him entering country music, especially since Post has called out Tyler as an inspiration. Having two rowdy guys coming in with Post was probably just not something Tyler was interested in being a part of. And I can respect that.

    First of all, it’s completely possible to go into a bar and not drink alcohol, I do it all the time.
    Secondly, bars are great neutral zones in which to meet up with people, and it’s not difficult at all to not engage with the crowd. Sitting there sipping on a Roy Rogers or a Shirley Temple and quietly visiting with someone who might or might not be drinking an alcoholic beverage is a pretty reasonable thing to do. And choosing not to stay when you realize that the group is going to include those who might not be able to sit and quietly visit while having a drink is also a pretty reasonable thing to do.

        I don’t drink and I am in bars, music venues, and festivals all the time.
        Tyler Childers literally headlines a festival each year called “Healing Appalachia” where dozens of recovery organizations set up tents and information booths, and they raise money for sobriety and recovery initiatives … and the fest still sells alcohol.

I do find this article very interesting because if this night went differently, would Tyler have been on Post Malone’s album? Maybe that was the reason for the meet up? I was happy Tyler wasn’t included on the album, but maybe we were one N-word too many from him actually cutting a song with Post (I made it political after commenting it wasn’t for the sake of a joke).

  Exactly. Remember, Post Malone had a strong relationship with Sturgill Simpson. Post had performed Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers songs in the past. Sturgill said he wanted to produce a Post Malone album. Then all of a sudden, Post Malone makes a country album, and neither Sturgill or Tyler are to be found.
  I really think the direction of the Post Malone album could have been different in different circumstances. It feels like the mainstream crowd embraced Post Malone, and perhaps the more independent crowd steered clear.

Wallen’s behavior in the controversial incident was a level of drunken buffonishness I can’t see a guy like Tyler wanting to deal with politics or no. Wallens just comes off as a shallow idiot all around. Post has a few redeeming qualities and a bit of depth.

  It’s not just his several incidents related to inebriation either. It’s also in how incessantly he references whiskey in his songs.
  And it certainly isn’t lost on me that mainstream country music is tied at the hip with the alcohol industry to prop up concert revenue as well as give entertainers ancillary sources of income. Frequent references to alcohol and name-dropping of alcohol brands is par for the course. But what I’m talking about here is how many times on a single album Wallen references whiskey like he’s leaning on it like a crutch.

I interpreted this account not so much in the realm of politics, but one of character.
Childers was aspiring to remain straight and narrow, and so he probably interpreted having a one-on-one conversation with Malone as something that was manageable to his thresholds. But when the setting abruptly evolves to a full entourage………..especially when one of them (Wallen) has a checkered documented relationship with alcohol………..it was just too much for Childers and he felt the need to emphasize his boundaries by walking out.
I respect that.

  I agree with this take. If Childers is known to be quick to give the “irish goodbye”, then it’s fair to assume that is the more likely reason. No big name star is going to be able to hang in a public bar without grabbing a bunch of attention – Post and Wallen being the biggest attention drawers.

    Also, let’s just say hypothetically political leanings played any part into the equation.
    Even though we are aware of Childers’ political persuasion overall: he also is very intentional in how he addresses and broaches political topics in his music and public discourse. He just isn’t like Jason Isbell for example: who the latter is an exceptional songwriter in his own right but also alienates many with how needlessly dickish he gets on social media. Childers, in contrast, has continued to strike me as rather measured and thoughtful in how he chooses to approach these conversations regardless if one likes what he has to say or not.
    So I just don’t look at Childers as someone who would just give the cold shoulder and leave without warning just because of political persuasion in most contexts. If anything, I see him as someone who would make a concerted effort to try and have an open dialogue with someone across the aisle based off of what I aforementioned.

      Yeah, to me Tyler’s approach seems to be more about trying to get people to relate to perspectives they haven’t yet considered, like the LVH video speaking to rural Kentuckians to see Brionna Taylor as a fellow Kentuckian. I reckon he wanted a quiet drink with a musician he respected, rather than a whole gang, sone of whom are notorious for drunken antics

      Great take.
      I might not agree with TC on certain issues, but the man is respectful and seems to be the type of person who would have a two-way conversation. Unlike that other guy in our preferred music spade who talks down to his fans.
      Speaking from personal experience, I’ve done exactly what TC was described as doing a few times in my life. Always because the crowd was either too large or some ijit tagged along. Never related to politics. But I’m a nobody, so who knows.

Are we sure the folks in the comments section here running with the “politics” thing, is related to actual – you know – politics (i.e., liberal/conservative) or is it perceived politics in the music scene where Tyler Childers fan base may not appreciate him hanging out with pop-country acts?
Cause I definitely think Ernest is implying the latter vs the former.
Which to that I would say, if Ernest and Wallen are that sad about Americana artists not wanting to hang out with them, they could – you know – record better music.
I know Ernest has gotten some credit for his hard turn towards more traditional sounds, but Wallen seems content to keep serving up whatever slop Music Row wants him to record.

    Okay, fine. Let’s call Childers a traditional Country artists (or whatever similar label you wish to use) vs the “traditional in sound only” Ernest and “traditional is Joe Diffie, right?” Post Malone and Morgan Wallen.

Wild story, none of it surprising.
Completely understand why he dipped, but it’s a little on Childers. Post is an entourage type. Assuming he was going to show up alone when he’s out partying in a major city like Nashville was a mistake.
No one around here is going to feel sorry for Ernest, but it has to suck to finish cutting a surefire #1 hit, and immediately get drug to some East Nash hole in the wall to get big timed by a guy you’re almost certainly a fan of.

Sidebar: I know this more than likely falls into the more superficial gossip side of things……….but I wonder why HARDY wasn’t with them at this time.
It has been well-documented for some time now that Morgan Wallen, HARDY and ERNEST are extremely close and are pretty much always seen together when they hang out (with Post Malone becoming part of this coterie as of late).
Between HARDY surprisingly laying low on the country end of things as of late this past year and this while actively focusing all of his energies pushing songs to rock radio, I can’t help but wonder if he has strained his relationship with the country music establishment in some way? I doubt his bromance with his buddies has eroded, but I wonder if some of Nashville is frustrated by all of his focus being directed to the rock scene and not even pushing another track from the so-called “country” half of “the mockingbird & the CROW” album to radio, as well as “Six Feet Under” performing poorly on the country charts.

Interesting story for sure. Does seem kind of weird but im leaning toward him not liking wallen though it seemed like he already knew he was coming. I mean hes at a bar around probably a few drunk people already so i doubt wallen getting drunk would be out of place. I always loke the hate the commenters always give towards wallen. The guy has spent more weeks at number one than anyone and has probably the greatest album far as being on the charts so i doubt he really cares.

I have never been on the Childers bandwagon as some have, for no reason other than personal taste. But I dare say he would trip over his own feet to hang out with Isbell, but what do I know?

  I’m with karl. Looked up Post Malone on YouTube coz Sierra Ferrell has deigned to be on the May 2025 part of his tour.. I lasted thru 75 seconds of a talking PM performance in London, I dislike the smell of burning tobacco, patchouli, and gasoline. Neutral on incense and weed. Post Malone stinks. Not that he’s a bad person quite OTOH! a generous person giving WAY generous tips to servers. I love that about him. Just don’t need to see, smell, or hear him, Beneficial that Sierra Ferrell and company will benefit financially. Puzzles me, who crowds of people will idolize, troubling. The only difference between Tyler Childers, Post Malone, Morgan Wallen, or Ernest is that Tyler Childers used to make good music and could one day do so again.
If Childers didn’t want to hangout with the pop-country brigade because they are drunken douchebags, then fine. I wouldn’t either. If he didn’t want to hang out with them because Wallen uttered the Forbidden Word a few years ago then he’s cowardly pansy at worst, and an image-conscious wokester at best.

  Yeah, I’ve seen some folks say this is a gossip story or “high school.” I think it would have been journalistically irresponsible for me to NOT report on this story after I questioned on numerous occasions why Post Malone did not involve folks like Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, and Colter Wall in his “country” album after touting them so much over the years. I think we now have our answer.
  Also, this story very much illustrates that the divide between Music Row and East Nashville is still a real thing. As numerous people have pointed out, when Ernest says “Politics,” he very well might be talking about the politics of country music.
  It really sucks that you can’t report on any story that people actually want to read without being criticized. For some reason, people think it’s the job of Saving Country Music to only post articles people don’t want to read, because there’s “soul” in that or something.
  Also, if this was a TMZ story, why didn’t TMZ report on it? Because barely anybody knows who the hell Ernest or Tyler Childers is in the wider culture.

Trigger, given some of the comments and questions here (uncertainty around the meaning of “politics” and whether this played a role in Childers not being on Post Malone’s album) I’m curious about how you report a story like this one. Did you reach out to Ernest, Malone, Childers, or any of their camps for comments or to clarify? Based on the article it seems like it’s just a report on what this Ernest guy posted on Instagram, but was there also behind the scenes work on your end?
I’m not a journalist and have no real sense of the right process for this; I’m just curious, especially given some of the confusion and speculation that’s come up in the comments. Thanks!

  Each case is different. Often I will reach out to an artist or their representatives to try and get further context. In this instance, Ernest’s Instagram post IS the further context.
  A couple of days before, Ernest appeared on a podcast with Jelly Roll, and basically said that he’d tried to reach out to Tyler Childers, but Childers didn’t seem interested in talking with him. This created a lot of speculation. That is why Ernest took to Instagram to tell the story.
  I could reach out to Post Malone’s people, or Tyler’s people. They’re not going to respond to something like this. Ever. If they want to broach it, they’ll do it on their terms, in an environment they can control. One of the main reasons I wanted to post this is because I have a feeling we’ll be referencing this incident in the future.

Some of these comments are really harsh. Morgan’s been called every name in the book in them. Do any of you actually know him? Feels weird to personally cuss out a guy you’ve never even met before. The guys gotten too drunk and made a few mistakes before. That doesn’t make him a bad person. Everyone around him says he’s actually a really good person. Shaming somebody for problems they’ve had with alcohol in the past does no good. Just makes you look like a judgmental ass.
