Measuring the sides of a rectangular box or tank is easy. How to calculate the volume of a box?

To find the volume of a rectangular box or tank, you need to take three measurements (length, width, height), then multiply them. In practical situations, you might have a plan or engineering schematic in which the measurements are all given making your task significantly easier. Three measurements need to be known to compute the volume of any box with a rectangular shape: the lengths of two sides of its base, as well as the height. For example, if the two sides of the base are of length 3 inches and 6 inches respectively, and the height of the box is 2 inches, then using the box volume equation results in 3 x 6 x 2 = 18 x 2 = 36 in3 (cubic inches).

Alternatively, the area of one side of a box might be given, and the height relative to that side. In that case just multiply the area by the height. For example, if the base of the box is 25 sq ft and the side of the box ortogonal to it is 4 feet long, then the box volume is 25 x 4 = 100 cu ft.
